Graduation Course: History of Tajwīd and Qirā’āt

This is a special in-person course, offered over the Critical Loyalty graduation weekend in August. In this course, students cover the history of Qur’ānic reading, including tajwīd and qirā’āt. This year, due to covid19, the course is online.

Students go through the history of the compilation of the Qur’ān from the death of the Prophet ﷺ all the way through and after the first books of tajwīd and qirā’āt were written. This course takes students through the traditional journey, but it is an academic course, so along with traditional opinions, many orientalist perspectives are also tackled. It addresses questions posed by both academics and traditionalists that many are afraid to ask regarding the variant readings — such as where they originated or which one the Prophet ﷺ recited in.

This course is a prerequisite for any ijāzah at Critical Loyalty, whether Qur’ān related or not.

UPDATE: Class timing is Saturday August 29 from 7am Edmonton, Alberta Time or Mountain Standard Time.
