LA01: Naḥw and Ṣarf for Beginners (Sep 2020)

In this course, students will cover the basics of the theory of Arabic Grammar — just enough to be able to read any text in Arabic and to able to know the ins and outs of grammatical analysis and how it was done by the originators such as Sībawayh, ibn Jinnī, and others.

The focus in this course will be naḥw and ṣarf at a basic level — focusing on having the students properly learn the terminology used by the grammarians and apply it in their studies.

Naḥw literally means “way” or “manner” and is used for Arabic Grammar. It is used to signify the way the language was used by the Arabs. Ṣarf translates as morphology. In other words, students will be able learn identification, analysis and description of the structure of Arabic words such as their root words, affixes, parts of speech, intonations and stresses, or implied context.

LA01 will focus on:

Types of words and sentences in Arabic

Prerequisites are to know how to read and write Arabic.
